Magic at Last

The time has come again for me to inject some respite from our usual electronic sounds as at long last the Magic Lantern’s debut album is about to land, and the band have kindly sent a promo copy for our lucky ears.

I first encountered the band during a hazy 5am show in a small tent at Secret Garden Party in 2009, and despite my inebriated state, was instantly arrested by their sound and have been eagerly awaiting a full release since. Last year whilst promoting their Cut From Stone Ep, I caught them again at Oxford’s The Cellar and had this to say.

The Magic Lantern draw on the vernacular sounds of traditional English folk music and weave elements of jazz and modern classical styles throughout to deliver one of the richest sounds I have heard in a while. The songs on A World in a Grain of Sand are immensely engaging both lyrically and musically and thus stand outside the bracket of the New-Folk scene which has become so popular (and tired) in the last few years. Violins, percussion, clarinets and some subtle electronics all help to elevate the music. If Nick Drake and Portico Quartet were to collaborate whilst drifting on a boat on the open sea, the Magic Lantern’s sound may emerge.

Singer Jamie Doe’s voice has become familiar like that of a friend’s, partly due to the fact that the record has been on repeat since I received it, but largely due to its soft immediacy and honesty. Below is the second track from A World in a Grain of Sand called Cut From Stone, a delicate track which builds subtly to deliver a glimpse of the jazz sensibilities explored elsewhere on the album.

The album is set to be released officially on the 6th of June, with digital copies available on all the usuals such as itunes and spotify. The band have also gone through a labour of love in creating hand-made physical copies (of which the image above is the artwork) which are available from the bands bandcamp page and at the album launch party tomorrow night, Friday 20th may, at the Dalston Boys Club.

ENJOY!

The King Of Limbs

Today Radiohead announced the release of their 8th studio album, The King of Limbs. Here’s the official video from the albums first single “Lotus Flower” featuring a warm creeping bass, a loose drum beat and as always, beautiful vocals.

To coinside with the albums release Stanley Donwood, the bands official artist, is holding a solo exhibition entitled “Work On Paper” at The Outsiders gallery in Soho. The exhibition features rare print editions, originals and brand new screen prints. Here’s what the artist had to say about the show:

“Work on paper, I thought… work on paper. The forthcoming show at Mr Lazarides’ earliest gallery acquisition, once an emporium of sadomasochistic paraphenalia called ‘Swish’ and now a sort of shop-cum-gallery called ‘The Outsiders’ is to be an exhibition of various marks that I’ve made on paper. And the thing is, I’m not actually in my studio, but in a kind of no-man’s-land in the crumbling edifice that houses it… It’s at times like this that I wonder why I didn’t listen to my teachers when I was younger, why I laughed at those careers-advice people.”

The exhibition will run until the 12th of march, for more information check out the official gallery websiteHERE

Bloc.

11-13 March sees Bloc back at Butlins (Minehead) to host what promises to be a top electronic music festival of 2011. The line-up is an endless list of to see and hear names, providing a range of styles to suit any time of the day. Unfortunately main sales have sold out, but fear not there is a list for potential cancellations.

Underhill

The Balkan Rally presents Underhill Festival (30.07), bringing the Balkans to the West country with one day/night of folk and dance music set amongst the woods and fields of Wiltshire.

Trees

eLDOKO aka Tom Elkington grew up with non-electronic music but curiosity soon led him to a new love for djing. After moving to Oxford and securing regular dj slots, he progressed onto a dedication for production. To date a series of original tracks and remixes that cover a range of downtempo electronica, techno and house have been completed. Expect melodic sample rich songs with a sprinkle of jazz to dance to or simply enjoy on a stroll.

‘Run For The Trees’ EP consists of three tracks and has received some interest for release in the near future. These two offerings show some insight into the spectrum of sound we can expect from Tom in the future.

Swing house with saxophones. Filtered build for the release of an ear easy warble bass.
eLDOKO – Run For The Trees

Deep house with tribal percussion, distant brass and a panning sharp trumpet.

Furthermore here’s some irony, Tom is co-organising a small weekend festival ‘Gottwood‘ this June in the Welsh forest of Carreglwyd. No hassle, no rules, just a physically and visually uplifting stride, towards the perfect weekend away from reality. Artists include Max Cooper, DJ Format, David E. Sugar, TEED and an Igloo hosted by Trouble Vision where I will be playing.

René Ménard – from ‘Le livre des arbres’
“In the forest, I am my entire self. Everything is possible in my heart just as it is in the hiding places in ravines. Thickly wooded distance seperates me from moral codes and cities.”
